Yes, Rhythm is everything. We can argue that we are rhythm before melody:
In the womb we hear mother's Breath and heart beat. (Hearing bering the 1rst sense we develop.)
I hope the reflecting upon the notion of rhythm will help you befriend your metronome, sing while walking,
and remember that guitar means "Drum With Strings".
When ou learn a song, isolate & learn the rhythmic component, in both melody and accompaniment.
You would be surprised at the emerging patterns. We often do not notice those patterns as we can be distracted
by other things such as melody, words, arrangements...

Mute the strings and "strum-drum" along, echoing a sung phrase, a horn or keyboard line....Have fun with it.

I suppose when we hear the same words repeated, we stop focusing on the meaning: we got that the first time around.
We start hearing the words as pure sound, the voice becomes non-verbal instrument. When that happens,I believe we enter an alpha-state, hypnotic-state, and we start to groove, to Be with the song instead of just listening to it.
